You can power a lightning rod (LR) directly with redstone. If the powered LR is pointing toward a second LR, the second LR can be read with a comparator, which outputs the same power level supplied to the first LR. This would effectively be wireless redstone, constrained by line-of-sight. They could also interact with the block they're directly attached to or pointing to, and be affected by wool occlusion.
Mojang likes to add things to Minecraft that can teach something about real life. One example being coral blocks and how they permanently die, teaching real-world impact of damage to coral reefs.
With real-world physics, many processes that consume power can be reversed to generate power, and vice-versa. Speakers can function as microphones, LED light can function as solar panels, etc.
If a lightning strike to the LR produces redstone power, then powering the LR should produce something.
