At the moment, you need to mine hundreds and hundreds of copper ore in order to make even a small build. This was reduced greatly when the number of copper needed for a block changed from 9 to 4, but it's still not enough in my opinion.
My idea is that if you smelt copper ore in a blast furnace, it gives you 1 full copper block instead of just 1 ingot, effectively a quarter of one . The logic behind this is that the blast furnace can smelt more copper out of each ore block due to the higher temperature. You can still craft the copper you smelt back down into ingots if you need. It also means that blast furnaces have a realistic use in the mid-late game, because most people just use a super-smelter with regular furnaces.
