Lightning rods and beacons

I've always wanted more improvements to the beacon mechanic, and one of those things could involve the lightning rods. My idea for how this would work is that lightning rods can be placed on top of the blocks powering the beacon. If the lightning rod is struck, then the beacon will become charged for a medium amount of time (maybe a day?). This will double the range of the beacon and cause the effect to be increased by one level. The lightning rods would need to be placed on a  3x3 square of copper blocks to work.
