Farming Amethyst

Currently farming amethyst is in interesting as they consist of pistons on a timer, which is not much better than farming it manually. A more interesting way of farming the crystal shards could involve pushing the crystals off of the budding blocks were they could continue growing slower on regular amethyst. This would add complexity to the farms and enable them to become more efficient.
