Since when caving lava isnt much of a threat if you have a single bucket of water on your hotbar, I propose that there should be some block which can spawn under lava in caves, which creates a bubble column like effect and makes superheated air over the lava pool. The superheated air would rise up above the surface depending on the depth of the lava and would cause fire damage to any player or creature that touches it (without actually setting on fire) and would evaporate water that touches it.
*note this doesnt make lava any harder for players in very early game but allows it to be a bit more of a challenge for late game players and allows mojang to design caves with more risk/reward systems
