Since copper is already confirmed for the caves and cliffs update, it would be a fun idea to add tin, too. Iron armor should lose durability in water as well as passively (due to rusting), but crafting it with tin on a smithing table would prevent it from rusting. Tin armor and tools would be iron-tier but with less durability. In addition, crafting tin and copper ingots together on a smithing table would create bronze, a metal that is very hard and durable. The bronze armor and tools would be iron-tier but have closer to 500 durability points for the tools and 300 durability points for the armor.
