When I first saw the geodes in Minecraft Live, I thought the blocks that turned out to be tuff and calcite would generate amethyst clusters over time.
Generating clusters from the mineral block would make more sense to me than a special amethyst block that looks the same but randomly grows amethyst clusters.
It's much more realistic since in real life amethysts are made from calcite (actually IRL it's silicate but MC seemed to go in another direction) from water, especially rainwater, depositing minerals and growing the crystals.
Perhaps, the calcite blocks being exposed to rain could be the minecraft way of growing clusters. Something more realistic.
