Minecraft is a game that offers many different ways of play for different people. Whether it's building, Redstone, adventure, Minecraft offers a unique playstyle for you. The impressive thing is how all of these ways of play are achievable through 2 core game modes. (Hardcore is just survival with stakes if you chose not to use commands of course.)
However, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way, Minecraft doesn't really offer a true form of Defence based survival. Raids are the closest example of what I mean. They require the player defending a fixed place from oncoming waves of enemies. It's one of the hardest challenges of the game, and part of the experience relies on creating a reasonable defense for the village in terms of walls, traps, or whatever else you can come up with. This is fun, but unless the player makes a VERY clear decision to do so, this feature can be missed entirely. Not to mention, the experience is very samey and can get old after a raid or two.
What I want is a new gamemode based upon the increasing difficulty of Mob AI where every night the monsters that come out at night become more and more aggressive and eventually start breaking and raiding your settlement. It would act like survival, but incentivize building to keep you or whatever you want to be protected from the enemy hoard. Your buildings now serve a function, and it would create a new type of experience for players to enjoy.
