With the Nether Update 1.16, chains were finally added to Minecraft, providing a feasible way to craft chainmail in Minecraft, albeit chainmail is currently weaker than iron armor, yet crafting armor with chains would cost more than iron armor. Of course, we cannot currently craft chainmail, despite chains being in the game, but it could make sense. Buffing chainmail in itself would cause the delicate balance of the armor tiers to be disrupted, so I have a different take that may sound odd - we downgrade chainmail. Let me explain.
Historically, chainmail has often been worn underneath coverings and armor, often as a second layer of defense, or a hidden method of defense.
So, we downgrade chainmail to be equivalent to, say, leather armor on its own, but it could be added to a piece of armor as an upgrade in the Smithing Table. How this would effect your armor would be between the following:
- Adding more defense - Its simple, but effective. Maybe it wouldn't appear in your armor bar, but instead would work more like an enchantment.
- Projectile protection - In real life, chainmail was often used to help protect oneself from arrows that get between your armor, as well as in the normal defensive way. So by adding chainmail to your armor, you could achieve a similar effect. This could fit nicely with how the current only use for the Smithing Table, upgrading to Netherite Armor, adds a passive buff against knockback, keeping a theme in upgrades having effects alternative to enchantments.
