Chickens laying eggs

My idea is that chicken eggs can only be layed when chickens are breeded, and the egg can't despawn. The egg will eventualy hatch and spawn a baby chicken.

    when an egg is picked up by the player should it prevent it from hatching?

    Yes if the taged egg item hatches in 5 minutes then it won't despawn because items take 10 minutes to despawn.
