If pikes were ever implemented, they should not completely beat one handed strategies but should instead add new plays of playing or new uses in combat situations.
The first addition I thought about was pikes, which are long spears. They would have very high reach (like 5 blocks), but would swing slower and would deal sword damage, and would maybe be unable to crit. However, they would be ideal in teamfights or fighting against some mobs so you can always keep a distance and keep them away. The concept of the weapon would be sacrifice dps for keeping the enemy away from you for longer.
You could also rework the trident so it may function like a spear, because currently the trident is very underwhelming. Deals iron sword damage, has the same range and is only useful in very specific circumstances, such as when you're in the water, and even then, depth III with a good sword will more often than not be more effective.
Next two handed weapon could be a two handed sword, which would deal as much damage and swing as slowly as a one handed axe, but deal full damage on every swing of sweeping edge. It would be the anti-crowd weapon, and could be very useful in 1v2's, as you could hit both opponents with one swing. When enchanted you could maybe increase the swing arc for every level, making it sweep the entire screen around you with one click.
The last two handed weapon would be the two handed axe, which would just deal even more damage per swing while swinging very slowly.
