Minecarts have been in the game for an extremely long time. Thought that time, there have been some updates such as the minecart with hopper, powered rails and whatnot. However, it has been a while since minecarts have had much attention. I would propose to add some new mechanics and possibly new kinds of track to serve different purposes.
One of these is to make it so minecart tracks can be placed on half-slabs for easier descents and to add another layer that can be used for minecart transportation. Along with this, vertical track could be useful for roller coasters and minecart organization. as you could store them vertically to take up much less space and it would of course just add another dimension to minecarts.
Now, for the minecarts themselves. First of all, having minecarts with chests fall apart is rather frustrating, so can that just not be a thing please? Also, a full speed minecart with a player in it isn't much faster than sprint jumping. All I suggest for their speed is to increase the speed for when a player is in a minecart and keep the speed for all other minecart types the same as to not disrupt farms and whatnot that utilize them.
Last feature I would suggest is to have an endgame item that can seriously increase the speed of a cart compared to just powered rails. This is an idea that is much more outlandish than the other things I have suggested but I think it would be a neat addition that would have minecarts get more use than they have now.
