As the title suggests, now that fire has its own hitbox (and loot table), items like charcoal could be made easier to come by (competing with coal for being the go-to).
The suggestion is simple: add charcoal to fire's loot table so that whenever a fire has an old enough age, it has a chance to drop charcoal when extinguished.
The change encourages more player input and would hopefully get more players to encounter charcoal on a more regular basis. The change provides a way for players who don't mine as much as others a more hectic way of obtaining the fuel for torches (i.e. set a forest on fire (or be opportunistic with a pool of lava) and try to put out all the fires that were just set).
The change could result in situations where a fire is set on sand, the player punches the flame, and charcoal pops out, but that fuzzy logic is more than made up for by the importance this change has for player acquisition and usage of charcoal.
