The reason this should exist is to tie up 2 ideas nicely while bringing more to a feature early in its development.
Copper and archeology are both very early in development, which is what "ancient sets" is based on.
These sets of ancient copper metal can be uncovered like the ceramic shards at the archeological sites. This is because some people want the copper tier of gear, and I think that's unnecessary. Archeology is subject to change, but in my opinion, endgame players might not pay attention to archeology if its rewards are mostly cosmetic. The stats or use to ancient sets is up to you. This isnt necessarily a tier of gear, more like chain mail. An uncraftable set obtainable by looting rather than making.
