With the recently announced 1.17 Caves and Cliffs Update, I think it would be best to introduce an overworld ore that's rarer than diamond and can be used to upgrade your diamond equipment similarly to Netherite.
- What is carbonado?
Carbonado in the real world is a type of diamond that's the toughest known form of carbon. Because it's related to diamond, It would be the perfect substance to be an overworld upgrade to diamonds.
- Why add this?
During Minecraft Live, when Agnes and Brandon introduced the Warden, they said that they wanted to recreate the terror a player felt on their first night. Similarly carbonado can recreate that excitement of finding your first diamonds deep underground.
- How does it work?
Carbonado should be fittingly rarer than diamond. The ores will require diamond or better to mine. Each ore block will drop one carbonado fragment (potentially more with fortune). With these carbonado fragments, you can use eight in a crafting table surrounding a normal diamond and craft them into a carbonado diamond. With this carbonado diamond, you can use it in a smithing table to upgrade a piece of diamond gear. Overall, carbonado gear would be stronger, but less durable than Netherite and would be susceptible to lava. If losing items bothers you, Netherite would be your go-to. If you want the statistically best gear, then carbonado is what you'd want.
