My take on onyx in Minecraft wouldn't really be like the rest
My idea is that onyx ore would spawn in the nether ceiling (it could spawn in nether wastes, crimson and warped forests, but not basalt or soul biomes due to the block pattern not matching with the soulsand or basalt) and could be mined with an iron pickaxe or higher tier. You would be able to then craft an onyx block (which would look cool and shiny by the way) that can be placed outside in daylight. Since onyx is black it would absorb heat from the sun and would turn into a heated onyx block, which would have orange highlights on the block. It would also damage un-armored players (sort of like a magma block) due to how hot it is. It can also be heated under or above fire, and in lava.
You can take your now heated up onyx block and put it in a furnace to smelt half a stack of items, then it would become cold again and you would have to heat it up again. Heating up onyx would take around half a Minecraft day, in fire and lava it would take around a quarter of a Minecraft day.
Onyx block can also be crafted into slab and stair variants.
Thank you for you time and I hope someone considers my idea
