They may do this though the random tick speed gamerule. They also may add a way to prevent the copper from converting without commands (bit like water keeping the colour in correl blocks)

Perhaps you could use a brush to polish tarnished copper too.

Another way to do it would just be to have polished copper or somethin that doesn't rust.

I think this would be better as a numerical game rule like random tick speed, but as a different game rule from random tick speed itself. Some people like to play on worlds or servers for a very long time, so a way to have the rusting take place over a long time (for example, a month of real time), without messing up the rates of crop growth and such would be nice.

If they do implement a game rule like this, I think increased values should actually represent longer amounts of time (the opposite of how random tick speed works) so that it is very customizable.

Zero could mean there’s no rusting at all, even if that’s not really intuitive with the “larger numbers = longer time” system. Or maybe zero could be instant rusting and -1 could be no rusting.

I think a survival way to prevent rust would be even better

what about adding glass panes to the blocks to make them rust proof and shiny? (invisible glass, just no rust)

I want a gamerule that allows the specific time to be set.

*ahem* they've added "waxed" copper block variants that stop oxidization in its tracks anywhere along the progression line, be it at the start or finish. This happened a while back.
