    I think it should be able to punch the ground and make sculk form at the player's position which, after a delay, would do a grasping motion to both damage and root the player if they haven't moved away in time.

    No kidding. I always found that cheesy tactics like sprinting, pillaring, making a ceiling or using boats are what eventually took away the fear the night in the first place.

    I think the problem is mostly that, once trapped or unable to pathfind to you, mobs stand still while you dish out damage. I really hope the Mojang team would remedy that, maybe by tying new behaviours (like retreating) to this kind of situation.

    With climbing... again, you have another problem with mob AI to fix, and that's better pathfinding. Climbing mobs like spiders get stuck on the wall all the time :-/

    CLimbing would be weird.  What if it destroyed blocks instead?

    The Warden should be able to climb only when the player is in sight and it is in pursuit so that it doesn't get stuck like the spider. It should also have the ability to Skulkify player-placed blocks, and it withers to dust. Or perhaps the skulk reaches out to grab the player?

    Or if the player is out of reach it could throw a stone boulder.

    If it is unable to hit the player with either technique it will retreat and wait for the player to go down before charging again.

    you arent meant to kill the warden as much as you are avoid it, afaik. devs so far have said its meant to guard something and not be killed but avoided

    How about scrwaming instead? The warden start to screaming and you will move one block backward no matter when you crouch.
