Hello!
The brush tool and the way it shaves off block layers to slowly reveal an item, does not feel like minecraft in any way, and strays the game further from its initial concept of a block game.
( Also, the diamond block as loot is ridiculous. The fact Netherite exists shouldn't mean diamonds are easier to find. )
The vase idea could be nice, but i do not think it should be the main reason to search for ceramic shards.
Here's my pitch:
When you find the archeology outpost, there is a group of Ancient Dirt blocks lying around. When Ancient Dirt is broken ( normally, without the brushing effect ), It drops a random ceramic shard. There are 9 different variations of ceramic shards, and you have to break all the Ancient Dirt in place like sort of a mystery toy bag system, when you have the chance to get a duplicate of a shard you already have.
The nine shard variants should each represent a different aspect of the lore, such as:
The Pillagers, Villagers, Wildlife, Guardian temples, Withers, The Ender Dragon, End cities, Piglins and Hoglins, And finally a question mark to leave some mystery, telling players there's another part of the lore that hasn't been discovered.
Those nine shards can be crafted into an Ancient Orb, a structure ( kind of like beacons and Conduits ) that effects the range it is in and prevents creeper and endermen griefing when surronded by Amethyst blocks.
