Name tagged mobs should show a health bar represented by hearts just below the displayed name above the mob's head. This bar would only show up when the mob is damaged, if they are at full HP only the name is displayed.
Instead of showing the exact health amount (one heart = 2 HP), the bar would always be 10 hearts long, so that a mob with a high health pool like iron golems wouldn't have a massive and intrusive health bar. For example, an iron golem with 50 HP left (half health) would show a bar with 5/10 hearts. An iron golem with 99 HP left would show a bar with 9.5/10 hearts. And an iron golem with 1 HP left would show a bar with .5/10 hearts.
The reason I want this is to be able to keep track of my villagers and pets to know whether or not they are damaged, so I can heal them. Mobs do not naturally regenerate like the player, so if they take chip damage over time, they may eventually die. This is not a problem for wolves and iron golems, as you can visually see their health level. But it is a problem for every other mob in the game.
I feel this fits in with the name tag, because you're very likely to care about the health of any mob you've named, whether it be a pet or a villager. And I feel this solution is much easier than adding a custom visual cue to every single mob that shows you whether or not it is damaged.
