By making crops more perishable, we increase the need to maintain them. (That's a good thing.) Thus introduce gophers that eat crops and turn grassy dirt blocks into dirt path blocks.
Gophers inhabit dirt blocks rather than breaking them and destroy adjacent blocks of vegetables, including pumpkin stalks and melon stalks, but not the pumpkins or melons themselves. If a block is broken containing them, they perish and leave behind 0-2 gopher meat (with similar benefit to rabbit meat) and 1 dirt block
They randomly break a dirt block along their path, representing gopher holes. If they do, they are visible as a small gopher creature the size of a rabbit and may exit the hole until they randomly break another dirt block at their feet or face. They are not fast, but will escape the presence of the player by breaking a dirt block or entering a space surrounded on 5 sides in which at least 1 block is dirt through which they can travel.
They are not friendable, but can be permanently pinned where there is no dirt.
