These zones would mainly be found in structure areas such as mineshafts and strongholds (only underground). These work by not allowing the player to place torches or any type of light source in these zones, and would be found quite rarely. The only type of light that can be placed in these dark zones are soul torches and soul lanterns. All normal light sources place in these areas would be put out. Adding a few new items to the game such as an extinguished torch or lantern, these could be turned back on using flint and steel(not in the dark zones though). Redstone would also not work in these zones. Also no light can shine into the dark zones, from the players perspective they would look pitch black.
Now some of you might be wondering how big these zones are. They would be fairly small and usually found in a corridor of a mineshaft or stronghold. They can easily be run through but mobs can spawn in them, in my opinion only certain mobs should spawn in these zones, such as cave spiders and maybe a new mob could be made. These zones could also be found in caves rarely.
To know you are in a dark zone, you could here a very faint whispering sound, this is for two reasons. One to add a little bit of horror to minecraft in yet a still "minecrafty" way and it could also be linked to the dark zones origins (witches curse?)
I believe this would be a great feature as it adds an extra challenge to mineshafts, dungeons and caves.
