The oak trees in Minecraft are disappointing. Maybe it's just because I live near a park which has a fair amount of several-century-old oak trees, but the MC oaks truly are.... boring. Yeah, we have the tall oak variant, but even that feels lacklustre.
Considering that other tree variants have a 2x2 version, I don't think this is an off-the-wall idea. That said, a 3x3 or a 3-wide "+" formation sapling configuration could be a wonderful idea for ancient oaks, too. These large oaks would, obviously, be formed with the already existing oak wood and leaves.
As for where these huge oak trees would generate: lone trees in the plains, forests, flower fields (flower forest?), and other similar biomes. Another place they could generate would be in a new, rare Ancient Oak Forest biome. An Ancient Oak Forest would also be a perfect place to introduce mossy oak blocks to the game, something Minecraft desperately needs.
Below are some photos of ancient (as much as 1000 years old!) British trees to help visualise the kind of oaks I am thinking of:

(PS I'm sorry if this is the wrong category! If there is a better place for this, let me know and I will update the post)
