I made a post recently about how some easy changes to the food system in the game could make the system less of a menial thing and a much more engaging gameplay element.
My suggestion:
Having apples fall from trees when you chop them down is reasonable, but for our purposes they should now be harvestable from trees themselves. Perhaps rare, one should find apples on leaves like you would see a full beehive.
From there we need a cheap, low-durability utility tool like Shears or F&S. A cane. Crafted like this:

It should be used to harvest apples from trees! This makes apple farms much more engaging and encourages a more hands on approach. Also it saves the forests!
