Improving netherite with nether star

Putting a nether star in the smithing table with netherite gear would allow it to get new effects:
relating to the beacon, I was thinking about potions effects based on the item you're wearing/holding: a netherite pickaxe could give you an effect of haste as you hold it, netherite boots could give a swiftness effect or jump boost, a sword could give strength and so on. 
I was also thinking about new enchantments such as life steal or an exp gain booster
