I don't think we need to make mining in the Nether a thing. Especially for an ore rarer than diamonds. I think that it would make so much more sense if ancient debris would be exposed on the surface of the Nether. This would encourage players to explore every nook in the Nether in hopes of finding ancient debris. It could be easily balanced by making ancient debris less common on the surface however it would still spawn at the same rate underground for those who want to mine for it.
The thing about mining for ancient debris is that there are no caves or anything to make mining even a little bit interesting. Other than dealing with the occasional lava spill, the player just mines in a straight line and blows the netherrack up with TNT or beds.
Imagine exploring the Nether early in the game and finding some ancient debris tucked away. When you get a diamond pickaxe, you can excitedly rush back and claim your prize. This would make searching for ancient debris so much more fun and would be a massive improvement over the current system.
