    Yes, and you don’t need to fill your head with a “skill tree”, what you do is how get better. 

    A few notes:
    Skills for each weapon is separated (sword, axe, trident);
    Archery skill does not improve damage, but reduces spread and hand shaking (I refer to the combat snapshot).
    Shield blocking skill;
    Throwing skill increases range.
    The "graph" of growth should be a parabola, which means that at the first levels your skill increases significantly, then less and less, and the amount of time that the player spends on "learning" will be insignificant at first, and then more and more.

    A couple more ideas:
    A fast but short run develops speed, a slow and long run develops endurance (satiety will be consumed more slowly).
    Frequently taking small damage will develop regeneration, Rarely taking large damage will develop health.
