With the way the game currently is, it makes more sense to enchant swords and axes with Smite due to the number of undead mobs in the game (12 in 1.15, including the skeleton and zombie horses, 13 in 1.16 including the skeleton and zombie horses) and the fact that Smite V adds 12.5 DP (6.25 hearts) (+2.25 per level) to attacks against undead. Sharpness V on the other hand adds 3 DP (1.5 hearts) (+0.5*(level-1)+1) to attacks against all mobs. What I think should be done to balance this massive difference in strength would be to revert Sharpness to adding one full point of damage per level (+5 DP(2.5 hearts)), to reduce smite to adding an additional 1.75 damage per level (+8.75 DP(+4.325 hearts)), and to add more non-undead mobs, like arthropods, to make it so that Smite does not have as much of an advantage against the environment. Such changes would help to balance out the enchantments and create more variety in what enchantments players place upon their gear. An additional suggested change would be to make it so that Smite and Bane of Arthropods deal an additional 0.5 DP (0.25 hearts) to other mob types. This would make it so that Smite and bane of arthropods can have some additional use against other mobs and make them slightly more viable against players.
