The witch hunts would be a new battle event, similar to raids.
Firstly, there would be a new type of village which would be quite uncommon, which spawns in swamp biomes - these are called Coven Cottages. In each cottage, a witch spawns.
Since these settlements are uncommon, it's in your best interest to purchase a coven explorer map from a cartographer which will lead you straight to the location.
Upon entering one of these villages, you will see that there is a progress bar (like raids) that appears, with the words 'Witches Remaining". This is because it's your job to kill off all witches within the settlement. Once that is done, in the centre of the settlement, an illusioner will spawn, which acts as a mini-boss within the area. The progress bar will update and be named 'Illusioner'.
The illusioner here, will work how Cory has planned, but in this case, it acts as a mini-boss. In this situation however, the illusioner can spawn in witches to aid it in battle.
The illusioner has 100HP, but once it gets down to half health, it will start to blind the player, and has a 20% chance of shooting arrows of weakness.
Once the illusioner has been defeated, it will drop a Dark Scroll and a Wicked Banner Pattern.
The Dark scroll is an item used to apply and remove curses within an anvil which costs experience.
The wicked banner pattern is a silhouette of a bat.
