    There's a problem.

    One of the benefits of Mushroom islands is that hostile mobs don't spawn.

    If they were on the mainland, hostile mobs could wander onto the mushroom fields.

    This does happen like 10% of the time I think. If not it does happen especially in bedrock.

    RatherNot Say Hostile mobs will have behavior added to them that will stop them from entering the biome.

    It's not that simple to add a feature to an existing entity. It seems like it would be much simpler to add your tropical island biome without changing the mushroom island at all.
