I suggest reworking Leather. This is my rough proposal to rework Leather in Minecraft:
- Create a new Item and block called a "Leather Strap" which would look, be placed and function mostly like the chain block.
- Create new Village Workstation (Leatherworking Table) and replace the Cauldron as the workstation for the existing Leatherworker villager.
- Allow 9 Leather Straps to be crafted from Leather at a crafting table.
- Allow 9 Leather Straps to craft into a single piece of Leather at a Leatherworking table.
- Allow leather armor and saddles to be broken down into a single piece of Leather Strap at Leatherworking table.
- Allow Rabbit Hides to craft into Leather Straps & potentially tweak Hide-to-Leather recipe/ratio
- Add chance for Pigs, Sheep, Ocelots, Pandas, Wolves, and Polar Bears to drop either *their own hides or various quantities of leather straps.
- Allow Saddles to be crafted from leather straps and leather at a Leatherworking Table
Note* Within this new potential leather economy, the existing Rabbit Hide crafting recipe would necessarily need to change or fit into the leather economy, so it may make sense to eliminate Rabbit Hides altogether and replace that item and drop with Leather Straps and just have different animals gain a chance to drop Straps in different quantities or rates. If more type of Hides were added, that wouldn't add much to the game without additional expansion on their uses (such as new types of leather armor or items/crafting recipes)
