I have been trying to make an elevator using comparator output from a lectern, but there are a few problems I'm facing:
1) The lectern's redstone pulse is interfering with redstone
2) Maintaining a constant signal strength while moving upward is bulky and messy.
Now this got me thinking, and I have determined that the redstone pulse is virtually useless, and can be recreated easily
If you get rid of this, really the only thing that would have to change is some traps or hidden activation systems, and makes way for a second feature - turning lectern pages with redstone, based on its signal strength.
The automatically-turning pages could be useful for certain map-makers, but its main usage comes with redstone. It's like a limited redstone block that you could vary the strength of! This would not make the redstone block niche, as you would need a comparator to draw any output, but it would allow many redstone creations to be simplified or compacted.
