Blocks in Minecraft are too destroyable. Other players can destroy your creations way to easily, it's annoying and makes it difficult to use buildings in pvp. Obsidian on the other hand is not as pretty and cannot be moved with pistons. Block hardening would make blocks harder to break and could be done to most blocks, so you could build a castle out of more than just obsidian. Block hardening would be done in a hardening press. The press would be made of pistons, a furnace, and obsidian. It would require three things to run, a heat source (lava, wood, anything you can burn in a furnace), obsidian fragments or dust (crafted from obsidian), and a block or stack of blocks that you want to harden. The hardening press would then heat press the blocks, creating a harder version of the block, these might be fire resistant, protected from explosions and would take longer to break. They would not take as long to break as obsidian, but would be harder than the original block allowing you to build with the materials you prefer, and ones that are more attainable than obsidian. You would not be able to harden anything that wasn't a block, or any thing that wasn't solid. Also falling blocks like sand or gravel could not be hardened.
