Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

Where would this block be found, and what purpose would it have.

Well, it will be found large open space in the nether, as well frequently in caves, in fortresses, and long corridors.

So, it's just a block that generates in both the nether and the Overworld, that simply hurts the player. It needs a reason to explain why it exists so it's not just some random block that serves only to be a nuisance when caving. It kind of makes sense in the nether though.

But, again, what purpose would it have? Sure, it could be used in mob farms, but besides being an annoyance while adventuring, players would just walk around it, or dig it up to throw it away.
