Staying true to the nature of having to fight and struggle for your food in the nether, keeping it a hard, but possible place to live, I suggest a very sad sort of plant. It naturally grows in soul sand valleys, using soul soil as a home. The plant itself is called Howling Bush that you can eventually harvest the Howling Fruit from. This food source provides a varying amount of hunger points.
Most mobs are frightened of it, but if you can lure a living creature into the reach of the Howling bush, a spectral sort of force will begin to come out of the plant, pulling it slowly towards it's great jaws, like a black hole. It takes no damage during the process, until it reaches the middle, and the mob dies. If your wolf accidently steps into range of this plant, the only way to save your fluffy friend is to destroy the plant before your pet reaches the middle. Your indication of this danger is a howl of sorts. It has locked onto it's prey. When something has been fed to the plant, a fruit will be produced, along with a creepy and warped burping sound coming from the bush. Intended feeding source or not, that fruit will have hunger points depending on what type of mob it consumed. Lure in a strong mob, and reap the benefits. (They can still attack you while being sucked in by the way, they just can't move their feet.) Weaker mobs produce an alright amount of hunger restoration. If your howling fruit came from a passive mob, It will poison you upon eating it.
