Although there is an in-game event (raids) it is caused by explicit player action. There are currently many mods, datapacks, and plugins that change this and are quite popular, such as the blood moon event present in many mod packs. I think it would make every new world more engaging if you, the Minecraft team added events like this, such as when you reach 10 days of gameplay more mobs start to spawn or more difficult mobs start to spawn. Or randomly between days 13-20 and 27-33 there is a chance that mobs all have strength I and speed I and that their player tracking is expanded by 20 blocks and that creepers can tactically explode block that the player is hiding behind.
(in writing this post I remembered two more events that happen) The pillager scouting group and the wandering villager This is also another interesting concept that could use more love mobs spawning in groups to attack you, or randomly timed NPCs to help you in random ways (maybe if you have a good rep with villagers while you are exploring a villager pops up and gives you an item that would be one of their trades)
Of course, this is important to have a toggle on so that if you wanted a controlled environment you could turn it on/off
I feel like this is a half-baked concept, but if enough care and dedication were put into this idea it would be very fun and gameplay enhancing.
Hopefully, you will give this the time of day,
