I have this idea of making a "totem" of some kind, with Dragon Heads on top of it, to prevent mob spawns within a 32 block radius (X and Z; maybe half that in Y?) per Dragon Head on the totem. Most likely the totem would be a simple pillar made of an End block, I'm thinking Purpur Pillar, and the Dragon Heads would be placed on the side of the top block. (It wouldn't be the prettiest thing in the world, but you could cover it up fairly easily.)
The main reason for this is to get away from spamming torches, sea lanterns, or whatever other lighting you want, to prevent spawns in any given build.
It doesn't have to be a 100% reduction in mob spawns. I'd be happy with it being kind of an opposite of thunder storms and have mobs only spawn at a light level of... 3 or less maybe? Because even at a light level of 3 it would mean we could halve, if not more, the amount of light sources we have for a build.
The reason I'm thinking a Dragon Head is that it's a late game item with no real use other than decoration at the moment, so why not add a feature where hostile mobs see it and cower in fear (i.e. don't spawn) of the powerful person who's been able to get one (or more). The only mob that might spawn as usual is Endermen, as they don't seem to like the Dragon and would probably like to show up and "pay respect" to whoever places it's head down.
(Sorry if this suggestion would fit better under Gameplay, I've been going back and forth between the two categories.)
