Records should've been hit during the Flattening, because NBT tags would allow a disk for any sound. The tag would name a sound, and if it matches one of the original Music Disks, it selects the appropriate sprite.
// Perhaps invalid records have a broken sprite and play sounds of a badly damaged vinyl.
I really love the music added to the Nether Overhaul, as well as the aquatic soundtrack, and it would be wonderful to use those on the surface too, hence asking for NBT records.
Perhaps they could be obtained by some trick similarly to the skeleton-killing-a-creeper thing, but the Nether soundtrack comes from getting Piglins and Wither Skeletons to fight, and Aquatic soundtrack from getting Drowned to fight skeletons? Maybe the overworld soundtrack from skeletons fighting witches?
On another note, Redstone-enabled jukeboxes would be a real gamechanger. Even simply pause/play with a redstone tick, hopper inserting from above, and hopper below pulling the disk out (unless locked) would be a great system.
Why? Besides sharing soundtracks from rare environs with new players, it would also enable much greater flexibility for mapmakers who don't understand audio-related commands. Music to set the tone, mob sounds, footsteps, something following the player... Great storytelling potential.
