Currently, there is little reason as to why you need a map in order to pinpoint a woodland mansion's location. While yes, it points towards where one is, there is nothing to actually stop you venturing out yourself and stumbling across one by luck.
For progression purposes I propose:
When nearby a woodland mansion, the illusioner could conceal its location from players by casting a ghost/hallucination of the mansion somewhere else within the forest and hiding the actual mansion amongst ghost trees. This ghost would appear to look exactly like the actual mansion, however, upon moving closer would vanish/morph back into the surrounding forest.
Players would be required to obtain a woodland mansion map, or walk around the forest aimlessly until they approached the real mansion. Players would also be aware of the nearby mansion due to audio/visual cues (hallucinations, supernatural movements, etc.) When within a certain range, the mansion's cloak would lift and the 'ghost forest' would fade as it appeared. Additionally, players who have conquered the mansion could slay the illusioners and remove the cloaking effect.
I feel like this adds a foreboding sense around woodland mansions and reinforces adventure progression of the game, while maintaining the Minecraft sandbox experience.
