Basically, instead of the difficulty setting being 4 options, (Peaceful -> Hard), the difficulty is an options menu. I've seen some other games do stuff like this (ex. Thief), and I really like it. Different parts of what make the game difficult are split up, and their difficulties can be set individually, for a more customizable experience. For example, here are some of the difficulty settings that could have their own settings:
- Hunger Decay Rate (Off-High)
- Hostile Mob Spawn Rate (Off-High)
- Mob Aggressiveness (Low-High)
- Mob Strength (Low-High)
- Mob Equipment (None-Full)
- Treasure Spawn Rate (Low-High)
- Equipment Decay Rate (Off-High)
- Bonus Chest (Off/On)
- Cheats (Off/On)
- Night Cycle Length?
- Mob Griefing (On/Off)
Just some ideas, taking into account what things the game already bases on difficulty, and other things that are already options elsewhere, in other menus or in Game Rules.
I think these extra options could add a great degree of customization and accessibility to the game. I've noticed other requests for people who don't want to deal with hostile mobs, but would like to still have to overcome hunger, or who want less hostile mobs at higher strengths. Also, settings that are already available as game rules, like mob griefing, could become available to players who have cheats off or don't know about game rules.
