Shields are overpowered and poorly designed as of now. This would emulate a sort of 'grapple' or 'kick' mechanic that many melee combat games have. Not only would this nerf shields to a significant extent, but it is done so in such a way that can be punished, lest your opponent drops his shield to swing as you with his sword whilst you have an empty fist out.
A 'combat triangle' would be created where fists beat shields, shields beat swords and swords beat fists. This would also create a mind game meta in attempting to predict your opponents next action. I feel these changes would significantly spice up the current combat system of the game.
