I think that void fog was an ambient addition to mining at low levels that generally improved the game. However, it should have more to it.
I think that since a lot of people branch mine, it kind of undermines the feeling of getting diamonds being difficult. Void fog could be re-added to combat this. The lower you get, the hazier the void fog could be. It could be darker and make light levels lower, allowing mobs to spawn in branch mining tunnels behind the player. It could also make mining more difficult and act almost as if the player has mining fatigue due to the dense air. This would encourage players to go caving as mining would take long.
This would encourage more caving, a part of the game that I rarely see people do anymore (although I'm probably wrong). I know that this is kind of a controversial idea as it limits a pretty big mechanic in the community but I would like to hear your thoughts.
