Drop-down box for organizing block variants in the creative menu

I've been playing Minecraft for 8 years. In that time, I've seen the building options available to players increase by a huge amount. But, unfortunately, the way we interface with these options has lagged behind. Case and point, block variants. As the types of blocks grow more numerous, they clutter the creative menu more and more, making it less and less navigable with each update. So I tried my hardest to come up with a solution.

I made these mock-ups in paint.net to highlight my idea--drop-down menus in the creative menu. As can be seen, blocks of the same "type" are stacked into a single slot, with an arrow being placed over that slot. When clicked, this slot would expand into the full list of variants. Clicking the arrow again would collapse the list back to one slot. It's important to note that these changes would not be introduced to the survival inventory. Just the creative menu. Different types of slabs would stay separate in your inventory, as would stairs, and wood, and everything else.

This would allow builders to more easily and quickly build all the amazing things they do. It would also allow for more item-variants to be added to Minecraft in the future, if need be. Imagine adding more biome-variants for mobs, like the Husk and Drowned for the Zombie. Or variants to existing block types, like walls, slabs, and stairs. All of these could be simply slotted into the existing item category, adding no hassle to navigating the creative menu.

    I'm trully baffled that this idea didn't get more recognition. For me a tooltip (vertical ?) would be better to look at than an expandable list that populates like on your screen. Just hold-click to select a variant. Also a button in the creative menu itself to switch from "compact mode" to "expanded mode", because sometimes expanded may be better. A little more tricky is how to group the blocks and items - for example should nylium be in netherrack or grass section with mycel etc. Also potions and enchantments could be organized better.
