A big downside to the current nether dynamic is the lack of midway materials.
Wood is of course a good starting point to nether survival, and netherite is the obvious endgame material.
Diamonds can be found in nether fortresses, but there is no real middle point for tools in the nether. Other than gold.
So here's my suggestion:
Each durability point of a gold item should be worth 1 block in the overworld, but 4 in the nether. It makes some sort of sense, since each block in the nether is worth 4 in the overworld. Why not durability too? It would also explain why piglins use gold tools, since wood is also available.
