The Illagers have a monopoly on Totems of Undying, and I'm completely, utterly fine with that.
It's their thing. I like that, and I want to keep it that way.
What I'm proposing is that Clerics can recycle Totems of Undying to alter their effects. I'm thinking this service would cost the player around 16 emeralds, maybe a little more or less depending on what the final product has to offer. You give them the totem, your emeralds, and they give you their advertised modification to it.
The sky's the limit as to what these reforged totems could do:
- A totem that gives you a burst of Speed and Haste when you hit half health
- A totem that saves you from death but also knocks your attackers away
- A totem that that saves you from death but sends you home anyway
- A totem that briefly gives Invisibility instead of Fire Resistance
These are just ideas.
I'm sure the devs would have no shortage of their own.
To differentiate them from the Totem of Undying, they should of course have their own respective names, as well as slight modifications to the Totem's eyes, arms, general features.
How this improves the game:
1. It adds more tactical use to the offhand slot.
2. Players will be a lot more eager to trade with Clerics.
3. Contributes to a growing list of Village-unique items (Exploration Maps & Bells)
4. Gives avid collectors a new challenge.
