Legends have it, that multiple heroes tried to conquer Nether:
All of them died, their heads now being on display in the fortresses, they died in.
My idea:
You should be able to find heads of dead heroes in Nether Fortresses (making this late mid game content, in preparation for the Wither and Enderdragon). When you wear them, your inventory will be exchanged with a new one for the time, you wear that head.
Your new inventory contains armor, weaponry and ability activators, fitting to the head. And you get fitting potion effects, like speed and jump boost for some thieve head.
This armor is level able with exp, and evolves with the player. Though not necessarily better than a maxed out standard armor, you may develop and experience new ways of fighting.
Whilst wearing this, you may not become hungry, but you also won't be able to place or remove blocks. This state should be known as the hero mode.
After taking the head off, and leaving the hero mode, you should get a status effect, which lasts a minute. This effect makes you unable to put on a hero head again.
I think it's self explanatory why you'd want to use those heads.
Ideas for classes:
Thieve, Brute, Mage, Archer, usw. You know them classes.
This'd also be interesting for PVP in multiplayer or in adventure maps.
