The Obphidian would be a new mob that spawns in Lava lakes throughout the Nether, including the smaller pockets near the levels where most Ancient Debris spawns. Their name is a pun on Obsidian and Ophidian, which refers to a snake-like reptile. These obsidian-scaled serpent creatures would have the ability to "burrow" through Netherrack to hunt players (unless mobGriefing was disabled), creating narrow tunnels that would allow Lava to flow through to add additional danger. They would not be able to jump out of Lava, but could exit it from the same Y-level (i.e. from flowing lava) and then continue slithering more slowly to attack.
Obphidians would drop an item form of themselves, in a similar manner to fish. This item wouldn't burn/would float on Lava, and could be eaten for a considerable hunger value, as one of the few sources of Nether food. It could also be brewed into a Potion of Obsidian Fins, which would apply an effect that increased the player's swimming speed in Lava (useful for rescuing yourself more quickly in the event you don't have fire resistance, or combined with it for exploration/travel purposes).
The idea is that this would add some additional excitement and challenge, along with potential reward, while mining for Ancient Debris, as it is currently a relatively bland task.
