Now that Mojang has floated the idea to upgrade diamond tools with Netherite to get a tool with more durability, I would like to see different end-game materials (Netherite, shulker shell, chorus fruit, conduit, enchanted golden apple, that sort of item rarity/effort to get) be able to upgrade diamond tools with different buffs/debuffs depending on the material. I see there being three main categories to these customizations: damage, durability, and mining/attacking speed. For example, one player could customize their axe to have a base damage of 15 health points but take 3 times long to swing. Or another player could make their pickaxe mine fast enough to insta-break cobble with Haste 2, but lose a quarter of the durability of their diamond tool. Again, this is just an example of my idea, I'm not sure how to balance it.
This idea could also be applied to armor, but I think armor is fairly well balanced and is being dealt with now with the newest Netherite snapshot. I would just like to see more tool/weapon customization available so the meta isn't a Sharpness V, Sweeping Edge III, Unbreaking III, Mending Diamond (or now Netherite) sword and that is all anyone ever uses as their end-game melee weapon.
