Since tools were introduced in Indev, the tool durabilities were never powers of 2. Initially it was 1 more than a power of two, but it has since been not the case.
As fo 20w06a, the "main" tool durabilities are:
- Gold: 32 uses
- Wood: 59 uses
- Stone: 131 uses
- Iron: 250 uses
- Diamond: 1561 uses
- Netherite: 2031 uses
Of these, only gold is a power of 2, and everything else is slightly away from a power of 2. For a game whose stack sizes are always powers of 2, being able to have a tool break when you fill a stack is more convenient that a stack and 1 more.
I propose these values for durability:
- Gold: 32 uses (1/2 stack) (0)
- Wood: 64 uses (1 stack) (+5)
- Stone: 128 uses (2 stacks) (-3)
- Iron: 256 uses (4 stacks) (+6)
- Diamond: 1536 uses (2^10 + 2^9 = 24 stacks) (-25)
- Netherite: 2048 uses (32 stacks) (+17)
These may be decreased by 1 to account for MC-120664.
