Minecraft is not wholly unique with its coexistence of PVE and PVP mechanics. Games like Destiny and other MMORPGs also intertwine these mechanics together. Destiny in particular creates separate Damage Values for PVE and PVP. What I'm getting at here is for swords and other tools to have two stats. One being "Attack Damage vs. Mobs" and another being "Attack Damage vs. Players". This will allow devs to not have to walk a tight rope when balancing PVE and PVP simultaneously, and give them significantly more flexibility when balancing both.
